Why strong projects don't get invited

Dr. Elle Yuan Wang

A note from Dr. Wang

Past NSF SBIR/STTR reviewer

I've reviewed NSF SBIR pitches, been on a winning SBIR team, and worked in R&D inside industry. The same pattern keeps showing up.

The most expensive mistake: founders write to the wrong audience. A large share of any review panel expects, explicitly or implicitly, a standard of academic rigor. Absolutes (“the best,” “revolutionary”), marketing tone, unsupported claims, no acknowledged limits, no engagement with prior work — these all read as the absence of it.

To founders these patterns can look superficial — or invisible. They aren't. The Pitch is judged on the written submission alone: no meeting, no follow-up, no chance to defend.

How it reads usually decides whether the proposal advances.

Quick answers

What does Grantproof do?

Paste your draft. Grantproof flags phrases that hurt your case for R&D-based funding, suggests rewrites, and explains why. Works in Claude.ai and Claude Code.

I'm not applying to NSF — does it help me?

Yes. Covers NSF SBIR/STTR, DoD SBIR, NIH SBIR, DOE, DARPA, and NASA. The rules for R&D-based funding don't change much across agencies.

What happens after I sign up?

Confirmation email, then occasional updates as the guide takes shape. Waitlist subscribers get subscriber-only pricing at launch. One-click unsubscribe.

Will Grantproof guarantee my Pitch gets funded?

No. How a proposal reads is one layer of why it gets funded. Strong writing can't substitute for a strong project.
